Ben Ellis Caldwell, 86, husband of Betty Jo (Conyers) Caldwell, died Sunday, December 9, 2018 at Kings Daughters in Staunton. He was born on January 10, 1932 in Augusta County to the late William Folkes Caldwell, Sr. and Lucy McClure Caldwell. Sgt. Caldwell was a Veteran of the US Army having served in the Korean conflict where he was a Tank Commander of the 45th Infantry. While serving, he was a recipient of two bronze stars. He retired from Westinghouse as a lab technician. He served as an Elder at Third Presbyterian Church. Ben worked at Shenandoah Harley Davidson where he detailed motorcycles. He was also a member of the “Retreads” Motorcycle Club. He loved to ride motorcycles, cut wood, and loved sitting on the porch enjoying his neighbors’ company. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son and his wife, Scott Ellis and Carolyn Sue Caldwell; a daughter and her husband, Teresa Caldwell and Tom Mixon; a step-daughter, Diane Hinch; two step-grandchildren, Zack Hinch and Emily Helmick Guyer; a sister-in-law, Lorraine Caldwell; numerous nieces and nephews; and his best friend, Roy Groah. A graveside service will be conducted at 11 AM, Friday, December 14, 2018 at Tinkling Spring Presbyterian Church Cemetery by Rev. Jacob Singleton. Active pallbearers will be Matt Ladd, Roy Groah, Bud Keeling, Zack Hinch, Tom Mixon and Bill Caldwell. An honorary pallbearer will be Wayne Hensley. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 PM, Thursday, December 13, 2018 at Henry Funeral Home.
