Barbara M. Lee

Barbara Jane Mills Lee, 91, passed away on March 26, 2023 at Shenandoah Nursing Home, Fishersville, VA.

She was the beloved daughter of John Thomas and Ruby Curtis Mills. She was born on November 10, 1931 in Remington, Fauquier County, VA. She was the youngest of six children and last living member of her immediate family.

She married Robert E. Lee in Arlington, VA on February 3, 1951 after a short courtship of three months. They were married for 58 years until Robert passed in 2009. They were blessed with two daughters, Cindy Lee Cox of Staunton (Wayne Bradley) and Jacquelyn Lee Walters (Robert) of Staunton. Grandchildren are Jackson Curtis Cox (Hannah Knopp) of Afton, VA, Stuart Francis Cox (Carissa) of Stuarts Draft, Charles Lester “Lee” Cummings III (Beth) of Lexington, and Mary Kathryn Cummings Whitesell (Brandon) of Fishersville. Great grandchildren are Oliver and Alyson Cox, children of Stuart Cox, and Lyla Rae Cummings. Step Great Grandchildren are Kaleigh Godin(Hunter), Landon, Dalilah, and Graiden Allen (Carissa’s children).

She was preceded in death by brothers Clayton, Irvin, Wilbur, and Dolan Mills and an older sister Anna Mae Dickson. She dearly loved all her nieces and nephews and their families. She cared for many friends and if she had not met you, then you were a friend she had not met yet.

Barbara retired from Northern Virginia Community College in 1988 as a financial aid secretary. She and Robert lived in Arlington until 1988 when they both retired and moved to Staunton to be closer to their family.

Barbara attended Madison College with a concentration on music. Music was a significant part all through her life; playing the piano by ear, and singing solos or duets with her sister starting from an early age. She was a founding member of The Happy Notes, a ministry choir in Staunton. Barbara also sang in the choir at First Baptist Church, Staunton where she and Robert were members.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, March 30, 2023 at Henry Funeral Home 1030 W. Beverley St. Staunton, VA 24401 from 6-8pm. Celebration of Life will be on Friday, March 31, 2023 at 11:00am at St Paul’s Methodist Church 2000 Shutterlee Mill Rd Staunton, VA with Dr. Steve Traylor officiating and Mr. Danny Pritchett. Internment following the service at Oak Lawn Mausoleum and Memory 1921 Shutterlee Mill Rd Staunton VA.
