CAROLYN J. COWELL STAUNTON, VA Carolyn Jean (Johnson) "CJ" Cowell, 86, wife of Marvin J. Cowell of 1900 Hillsmere Lane, Staunton, died Thursday, June 9, 2011 at her home, Emeritus of Staunton. She was born December 1, 1924 in Rocky Mount, NC, a daughter of the late Roy Joseph and Pearl (Smith) Johnson. "CJ" was a graduate of Duke University, class of 1947. She was a LPN and a homemaker. She was a member of Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church, Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority, Eastern Star, and was a volunteer for many years with the AMC Thrift Shop. In addition to her husband, family members include a daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Fred Armstrong of Staunton; two sons and daughters-in-law, Keith and Lani Cowell of Raleigh, NC and Charlie and Carinne Cowell of Bakersfield, CA; a sister and brother-in-law, Ruth Mathis and Earl Butler of Columbia, SC; eight grandchildren, Jennifer Sandlin Bess and her husband, Eric, Shannon Armstrong St. Jacques and her husband, Kevin, Stacey Armstrong Wetterer and her husband, Joby, Jason Cowell and his wife, Melissa, Keith Cowell and his wife, Sheila, Mark Cowell and his wife, Jenn, Shelby Cowell, and Carley Cowell;; and 9 great grandchildren. A memorial service will be conducted at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, June 25, 2011 at Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church by Rev. Robert D. McCarty. The family will receive friends prior to the service at 11 a.m. at the church. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, Central and Western Virginia Chapter, 1160 Pepsi Place, Suite 306, Charlottesville, VA 22901 or the Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church Memorial Fund, 2807 North Augusta Street, Staunton, VA 24401. The family would like to give special thanks to Dr. Kerry Alexander, the staff of Emeritus for the loving care they gave during the past six years, and to Hospice of the Shenandoah.
