CHARLES N. HARRIS STAUNTON, VA Charles Newton Harris, 82, of Staunton, passed away May 30, 2012, at his residence. Now at peace and in health with his loving life partner, Mamie Monroe, who preceded him in death in March 2002. He was born August 6, 1929, in Greenville a son of the late Price Newton and Cora Bell (Harris) Harris. Mr. Harris was a veteran of the U.S. Army. Prior to retirement, he was employed by the City of Staunton Public Works Department with 21 years of service. Charles embraced the children and grandchildren of his life partner as though they were his own and built a family. Every soul that was touched by this caring and dedicated man through-out his life took with them a smile in their heart. Charles was an avid outdoorsman, including hunting and fishing, and found great joy in telling stories of his outdoor adventures. Charles is survived by a special nephew, Sam Harris, Jr., and his wife, Pat, of Staunton; Charles will also be greatly missed by a special "granddaughter", Judy Seal of Crimora, who "Granddaddy" Charles helped raise and guide. She and her husband Ronnie, along with all those who knew him, mourn the passing of a special man, loved and respected by all. He is also survived by a sister-in-law, Virginia Harris; a number of nieces and nephews; a very special friend, Buddy Smiley of Greenville, with whom Charles shared his love of the outdoors and spent much time with. In addition he is also survived by the family of his late life partner, with special remembrance by Gene Monroe and Mamie "Sis" Powell both of Staunton and a number of grandchildren and great grandchildren. In addition to his loving life partner and parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Sam Harris; and three sisters, Margaret Lockhart, Ethel Watts, and Libby Harris. He was the last member of his immediate family. A graveside service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday, June 3, 2012, in Hebron Presbyterian Church Cemetery by the Rev. Russell Heinrich. Active pallbearers will be Buddy Smiley, Mutt Humphreys, Jeff Humphreys, Tommy Shipe, Wayne Powell, and Frankie Mawyer. The family will receive friends from 7 until 8:30 p.m. Saturday, June 2, 2012 in the Henry Funeral Home.
