STAUNTON, VA Clara (Hemp) Botkin, 91, wife of the late Calvin Joseph Botkin for 63 years, of Staunton, died Wednesday, October 21, 2015, at King's Daughters' Community Health and Rehab Center. She was born June 13, 1924, in Augusta County, a daughter of the late Leonard Fitzhugh and Eula Susan (Gladwell) Hemp. She was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church where she was involved in the Golden Deeds Sunday School Class, Sunshine Group, Helping Hands Circle, and St. Paul's Voice Newsletter. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Daniel Joseph Botkin; a daughter, JoAnn B. Conner; two brothers, Kenneth Leonard Hemp and Elwood Franklin Hemp; and four sisters, Nila Schapansky, Faye Lynn, Lena Arehart, and Ann Verduyn. Family members include a son-in-law, Raymond T. "Junior" Conner of Staunton; a sister, Emma Jean Desper and husband, Glenn; a granddaughter, Amy C. Sumner of Staunton; and two great grandchildren, Zachary Anderson Sumner and Madyson Grace Sumner; and a number of nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 24, 2015 in St. Paul's United Methodist Church by the Revs. T. Bryson Smith and Gene Williams. Interment will follow in Thornrose Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Zachary Anderson Sumner, Tim Good, Brad Good, Danny Mullins, Shawn Mullins, Mark Cline, Scott Desper, and John Rutledge. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Golden Deeds Bible Class, Sunshine Group, Helping Hands Circle, Ashleigh Wagner, Bill and Robyn Chestnut, Barry and Dreama Taylor, Joyce Breeden, John Conner, and Susan Allen. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Friday, October 23, 2015 in St. Paul's United Methodist Church and other times at the residence. Memorials may be made to St. Paul's United Methodist Church, 2000 Shutterlee Mill Road, Staunton, VA 24401 or to the charity of one's choice. Arrangements have been entrusted to Henry Funeral Home and Cremation Center.
