David Eldon Herr

David Eldon Herr, long-time Staunton resident, passed away on Friday, July 22, 2016.  He was able to be at home surrounded by his family due to the support of the Hospice of the Shenandoah.  He was born November 27, 1942 in Tipp City, Ohio. Dave had three passions in his life:  his family, teaching, and service.  He and his wife, Sherry Herr, have been married one month less than 45 years.  His immediate family includes his son Samuel E. Herr, wife Elizabeth Herr and two grandchildren Madelyn Kate and Charles David, his son Ron A. Herr, wife Jessica Herr and two grandsons Cody Layne and Tyler Robert Comisford and granddaughter Hadley Kate Herr, and his daughter Kathleen “Katy” D. Lovell, husband Eli R. Lovell, and three sons Liam Richard, Jonah Lee, and Maddox David. He has two beloved brothers and sister-in-law, Tim Herr and Tom and Marie Herr, in addition to his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Roger and Trish Hall.  He is also survived by his 96 year old mother-in-law, Billy Dell Hall, with whom he had a special relationship. Dave’s passion for teaching was legendary, and he achieved his goal of never retiring.  He taught at James Madison University for 41 years, preparing teachers for the classroom and life.  Intertwined into his career was his service.  For many years, he conducted summer camps for institutionalized adolescents and children throughout Virginia.  He began the Friends of Rachel club at JMU, the first at the college level.  He went on enumerable alternative spring and fall breaks with his students, providing various services to needy communities.   In addition, he was a youth league coach and coach of the Staunton Sabotage AAU girls basketball team, which held a special place in his heart.  He was also a CASA volunteer.  Being an active member of Olivet Presbyterian Church was a source of great joy for him. There will be a memorial service 4:00 PM Sunday, July 31, 2016 at Olivet Presbyterian Church. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to CASA, 119 West Frederick Street, Staunton, VA 24401 and Friends of Rachel, 800 South Main Street, JMU Box 8130, Harrisonburg, VA 22807.
