Dennis Grayson Case

STAUNTON, VA Dennis Grayson Case, 79, of Staunton, died Sunday, June 9, 2013, at his residence. He was born on November 21, 1933, in Henry County, a son of the late Grayson Andrew and Elsie Maybell (Boswell) Case. Family members include a nephew, Christopher C. Case of West Allis, WI. He was preceded in death by a brother, Andrew Lloyd Case and a sister-in-law, B. Jeanette Miller. Mr. Case graduated in 1951 from John D. Bassett High School. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Roanoke College in 1955 and a Masters of Arts degree from James Madison University in 1965. Mr. Case was an instructor of English and later served as chairman of that department at Staunton Military Academy from 1955 until 1973. He was appointed Headmaster of the Academy in 1973 and held that position until 1975. In 1975, Dennis became assistant principal at Riverheads High School in Augusta County, serving in that capacity until he retired in 2008. With his retirement in 2008, Mr. Case had rendered fifty-two years of dedicated service in the field of education. Dennis was a faithful and active member of Trinity Episcopal Church in Staunton. He served as a member of the Vestry for 24 years, many of those in the positions of Vestry secretary, treasurer, and also Senior Warden. Mr. Case chaired two rector search committees as well as several assistant rector searches. He was elected to consecutive diocesan councils and served on the Standing Committee of the diocese of Southwestern Virginia. Furthermore, Dennis was appointed as deputy from the diocese to serve at the General Convention of the Episcopal Church. A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 15, 2013, at Trinity Episcopal Church conducted by the Rector Nancarrow. Honorary pallbearers include the Vestry, past Senior Wardens, and the Trustees of Trinity Episcopal Church: Sara Battin, Thomas Bell, Barbara Bringman, Kay Buchanan, Judy Burtner, Stephen Carpenter, Richard Cason, Charles Chittum, Richard L. M. Coleman, Katherine Dozier, Donald Fowler, Beatrice Harnad, Ernest Holley, Sara James, Theodore Jordan, Patricia McPherson, Sarah Mueller, Richard Obenschain, Patricia Opie, Bobbi Regi, and William Tate. Burial will precede the funeral service at 3 p.m. Friday, June 14, 2013, at Sherwood Memorial Park in Salem. Memorial gifts may be made to Roanoke College's Case Scholarship or to Trinity Episcopal Church. Henry Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
