DOLORES KOONTZ SAYRE  FISHERSVILLE, VA… Dolores Koontz Sayre passed away Thursday, November 16, 2017 at Royal Care Senor Living. Mrs. Sayre was born July 16, 1922, the youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Koontz of Weyers Cave, Virginia. She married George Miles Sayre of Mt. Crawford on January 23, 1954. They were married 55 plus years. She was preceded by her husband, son Alan L. Sayre, her mother and father and two sisters Nancey Gay Flora of Camden, SC and Dorothy K. Craun of Weyers Cave, Virginia. She is survived by one brother Lester M. Koontz of Florida, a niece Judy A. Craun of Harrisonburg, nephews Benny F. Craun of Staunton, H. B. Flora, II of Kentucky and John Koontz of Florida. Mrs. Sayre had a realm of special and loving neighbors and friends. Two very special friends Julian (Buddy) W. Rittenhouse and Carol P. Rittenhouse. She was a graduate of Weyers Cave High School, a member of the National Honorary Beta Club, and attended Maryland General School of Nursing in Baltimore, Maryland. She was employed at Harrisonburg Telephone Co. in Weyers Cave and worked during her high school days and on weekends when needed. During World War II she accepted a position at the Army Woodrow Wilson General Hospital in Staunton. She was assistant manager of the transport office that handled al telephone, telegraph, and teletype messages. After the closing of the hospital in 1946, she accepted a position in the office of Maphis Chapman in Harrisonburg. Later she accepted a position in the office of the Commissioner of Revenue for the City of Staunton. When the Korean Conflict occurred in 1950, she was offered a position as executive secretary of the Selective Service Board for Augusta Co. She resigned the position in 1956 when she and her husband moved to Harrisonburg. The Sayres left the State of Virginia and moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin where Mr. Sayre was made President of Wiscold Cold Storage and remained there for twelve years. Mr. Sayre retired at age sixty-five as a Chairman of the Board and moved back to Harrisonburg. While there they had the opportunity to visit nine countries. Due to failing health they downsized in housing and built in Fishersville. They were members of the Fishersville United Methodist Church having transferred from Asbury United Methodist in Harrisonburg.  Visitation for family and friends will be one hour prior the service in the Henry Funeral Home.  Graveside services will be conducted by Pastor Larry Nolff at 11 a.m. Monday, November 20, 2017 in Thornrose Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the American Heart Association or charity of your choice.
