Donald Lee Shoemaker

Donald Lee Shoemaker, Sr., 86, passed away on Saturday, October 20, 2018 at his residence, 112 Joan Circle, Staunton, Virginia in the presence of his wife of 66 years, Norma Jean (Houff) Shoemaker.  He was born on March 13, 1932, in Washington, D.C., son of Ward C. and Beulah O. (Gayhart) Shoemaker.  He graduated from Wilson Memorial High School, class of 1951, attended Bridgewater College before being drafted in the US Army.  He received an honorable discharge two years later and began his career with the US Postal Service at Woodrum Station, Staunton, serving as its supervisor and retiring in 1987.  He owned and operated Custom Lawn and Garden Service for a number of years and then retired from Sunnyside Retirement Community as a Security Officer.    He was a member of Staunton Church of the Brethren and served many offices including chairman of the board.  He was a member of American Legion Post 0013 and NARFE Chapter 0178.  A member of Augusta Lions Club for forty years, he was a very dedicated Lion and rose to the office of District Governor. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Jean Elizabeth Shoemaker.  Surviving is his wife Norma, a son Donald L. Shoemaker, Jr. and his wife, Nancy, of Middlebrook, Va., and brother Kenneth and his wife, Carol, of Staunton.  Three grandsons, Devon Shoemaker, Joshua Nuckolls and wife Katie, and John C. Nuckolls, Jr., all of Staunton.  Four great grandchildren, Morgan, Braydon, Sadie and Jase, niece Laura, nephew Brandon and grandniece Lily.  Also, very special cousins Kathy Gayhart and Nancy (Hartman) Dove. There will be a Lions memorial service on Tuesday, October 23, 2018 at 6:30 p.m. at Henry Funeral Home.  There will be a memorial service at the Staunton Church of the Brethren at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 24, 2018 officiated by Rev. Scott Duffey.  The family will meet with friends following this service.  Burial will be private officiated by Pastor Rodger Dove. Don would be honored if, instead of flowers, a donation would be made to Staunton Church of the Brethren or the Augusta Lions Club, PO Box 2613, Staunton, Va. 24402. The family would like to thank palliative care, Augusta Hospice and especially, Robin, Cindy, Kathy and Marsha for their care. Arrangements by Henry Funeral Home.
