Doris June Riley

DORIS K. RILEY SWOOPE, VA On October 3, 2011, Doris June King Riley passed on to her eternal home. She was a daughter of Wallace King and Ethel Stephens King of Fishersville. She was born June 20, 1931, and we celebrated her 80th birthday this year with a party honoring her life, and that of her friends and family who have shared in the passage of her years. Her family, who already greatly miss her, are Jacquelyn Shearon Braswell and Robert King Riley; daughter-in-law, Shelby Howdyshell Riley; and grandchildren, Christopher Drew Shearon and Megan Nicole Riley. She was a woman of many strengths, personally and professionally -- she was a graduate of Fishersville High School, attended Longwood College and after marriage to Charles Robert Riley on June 24, 1950, she graduated from James Madison with her teaching degree. She taught at Fishersville Elementary, Hebron School, Beverley Manor Elementary and Westside Elementary Schools. Many times while shopping, she would meet a former student and they would share old times together. After retirement, she spent lots of time with friends and family, always enjoying shopping, eating out, and entertaining in her home. She was devoted to her Shelties, and many will always remember her as she traveled around with her beloved canine friend "Shelly". She belonged to Hebron Presbyterian Church, whose members showed Doris and her family such love and compassion throughout the last year. They freely offered their time, food, skills, friendship, and love. To be surrounded continually by such love and friendship was an encouragement not only to Doris, but to us, her family, as well. We believe in the Word and promises of our God and Savior Jesus who offers eternal life to those who will receive Him. We saw His love and care reflected in all of you who share in this belief and continually lifted up Doris with your prayers. We did not see her healing of the evil cancer here on earth, but we rejoice in the knowledge of the wonderful life she is now experiencing in her heavenly home. We are thankful for the wonderful staff of Augusta Health, Hope Cancer Center, Care, Augusta Home Health, Hospice and Middlebrook Family Medicine. Everyone at these facilities treated her with love, patience and kindness. We especially appreciate the compassion of Dr. Rob Marsh who treated her with dignity and concern for her comfort and well being. A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, October 7, 2011, in Hebron Presbyterian Church. Burial will follow in the Church Cemetery. Pallbearers will be her friends, Fred Smiley, Bobby Shipe, Burt Major, Charles Buchanan, Mike Ruleman, and Mike Dundas. The family will receive friends from 7 until 9 p.m. Thursday, October 6, 2011, in the Henry Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, we request memorials be made to Hebron Presbyterian Church, Hospice, SPCA, or Presbyterian Children's Home of the Highlands, P.O. Box 545, Wytheville, VA 24382.
