DOROTHEA F. KOOGLER STUARTS DRAFT, VA Dorothea Marie Alfreda (Friell) Koogler, 88, widow of Lyle Koogler, of 68 York Avenue, died peacefully in her home in Stuarts Draft on Thursday, December 27, 2012.. She was born December 15, 1924, in Philadelphia, PA, a daughter of the late J. Alfred and Theresa (Scola) Friell. She was a graduate of Temple University, Class of 1942. She worked as typing instructor for the U. S. Army, where she met and married Lyle Eligah Koogler on March 24, 1945. She moved to Rockbridge County after her marriage. She started teaching at Spottswood High School in 1958 and moved to the newly-built Riverheads High School, where she was active with student dramatic productions. While there she earned a MA in Business from Madison College and advanced graduate studies in Education from UVA. She became a guidance counselor and retired in the mid-80's so that she and Lyle could travel the world. She was a member of Mt. Carmel Presbyterian Church and the Retired Teachers Association. In addition to her husband, she was also preceded in death by a son, Edward Lyle. Family members include a son and daughter-in-law, Sam and Roxanne Koogler of Fairfield; a daughter and son-in-law, Terry and Frank Southerington of Staunton; a sister, Gloria J. Thill of St. Paul, MN; and five grandchildren, Paul, Jennifer and Margaret Southerington, and Will and Frances Koogler. A funeral service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Wednesday, January 2, 2013, in Mt. Carmel Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Jack Heinzelman. Burial will follow in the Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5:30 until 7 p.m. Monday, December 31, 2012, in the Henry Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Koogler Family Scholarship Fund at Mary Baldwin College.
