DOROTHY S. GARDNER Dorothy Ann Sutton Gardner was born on November 1, 1926 in Beckley, West Virginia to Charles Valvelle Sutton and Kenova Herbert Sutton. She graduated from Newport News High School in Newport News, Virginia and attended Madison College before attending the Medical College of Virginia (MCV) School of Nursing. While she was at MCV, Dorothy met and later married Dr. Rufus Solomon Gardner, Jr. on June 21, 1949 after graduating from nursing school. Dorothy and Rufus lived in Beaufort, SC, Dallas, Texas and San Diego, CA while Rufus was serving in the Navy. They later settled in Salisbury, Maryland where Rufus practiced internal medicine for 16 years and their daughter was born. While living in Salisbury, Dorothy helped Rufus with his medical practice and volunteered at the Wicomico Medical Auxiliary and Wicomico Presbyterian Church where she taught Sunday School. After her husband, Rufus accepted a position at the Woodrow Wilson Rehabilitation Center in Fishersville, Virginia, Dorothy and her family moved to Staunton, Virginia in 1971. Dorothy assisted Rufus in doing physicals for Social Security Disability Administration and volunteered at the Hospital Auxiliary Thrift Shop. She was a member of the Beverly Manor DAR, Deep County Garden Club, Augusta Stone Presbyterian Church and Covenant Presbyterian Church. Dorothy enjoyed being a wife, mother, grandmother and homemaker as well as entertaining, traveling and spending time with family and friends. The single most important thing to Dorothy's life was her family. Surviving is one daughter, Ruth Ann Gardner and three grandchildren, May Li, Sue and Shan Gardner and one sister, Florence Bailey and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Rufus S. Gardner, on December 10, 2011. A memorial service will be conducted at 11 AM on October 31, 2015 at Covenant Presbyterian Church. Burial will be private at Gardner Memorial Cemetery in Hillsville, Virginia. Following the service, the family will receive friends at the church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Covenant Presbyterian Church at 2001 N Coalter Street Staunton, VA 24401 or to the hospice of the Shenandoah PO Box 215 Fishersville, Virginia 22939.
