DOUGLAS G. THORPE STAUNTON, VA Douglas Garfield Thorpe, age 66, passed away May 28, 2012, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital, Harrisonburg, Virginia. He was born November 4, 1945, in Staunton, the son of the late Stieny Garfield and Elsie Thorpe. Besides his parents, he is predeceased by his brother, Richard Thorpe. Doug was a member of the Pleasant Valley Church of the Brethren and recent attendee at Memorial Baptist Church. Doug has always worked in the Staunton area, starting as credit manager for Sherwin-Williams Paint company, co-founder of Augusta Video, and later became a general contractor and developer in Augusta County. In 1998 he and his wife and sons opened Commonwealth Promotional in Fishersville where he worked until his retirement. On October 10, 1969, he married Wanda Lee Wright who survives. Also surviving are his two sons and their families, Bradley Garfield Thorpe (Sandi) and children, Nicolas and Haley, Daren Douglas Thorpe (Carley) and children, Aubrey and Stella, and his "special family" Susan and Stephanie Fultz and Kathy Vass. Doug was very close to and adored by his grandchildren - as well as admired and respected by other family members and many life time friends who will miss him greatly. A celebration service will be held Thursday, May 31, 2012, at 7 p.m. at Memorial Baptist Church. The family will greet friends following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Memorial Baptist, Minister's Discretionary Fund, 224 Taylor Street, Staunton, VA 24401. The family extends their thanks and appreciation for the acts of kindness, prayers, and support received by many who called Doug their friend. Special thanks to Harry and Jane Swecker, neighbors and close friends who answered to every call any day, any hour. Special thanks also to the entire staff and physicians at RMH for seven years of medical expertise and compassionate care. Henry Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
