Elizabeth Guss

STAUNTON, VA Elizabeth Irvine Guss, age 100, completed her earthly journey on March 17, 2013. She was born to George Francis and Mary Elizabeth Irvine on August 11, 1912 in Augusta County. She graduated from the University of Virginia in 1935 with a nursing degree, where she met her husband, Dr. John H. Guss. They were married nearly 65 years before he preceded her in death. Both were lifelong members of First Presbyterian Church. A beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, she was a woman of deep and abiding faith who lived a life of generosity and devotion to others. All who knew her were enriched by her kind, gentle spirit and positive outlook on life. She is survived by her daughter, Nancy Ayling and her son-in-law, Charles; her granddaughter, Mary Elizabeth Hagen and her husband, Scott; her grandson, John Ayling and his wife, Sarah; and two great grandchildren Hollis Ayling and Ivy Ayling. A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Friday, March 22, 2013, by the Rev. Dr. Richard Dietrich at First Presbyterian Church. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to First Presbyterian Church, 100 East Fredrick Street, Staunton, VA 24401. Henry Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
