EMORY LENWOOD SHIFLET BRIDGEWATER, VA… Emory Lenwood Shiflet, 91, of Bridgewater Retirement Community, and formerly of Fort Defiance, Virginia, passed away Saturday, July 22, 2017. He was born November 5, 1925, the son of the late Dyche E. and Edna Skelton Shiflet. He is survived by his wife, Helen Wright Shiflet. In addition, he is survived by a brother, Claude Shiflet (Alice) of Asheboro, North Carolina. He is also survived by four children: daughter, Barbara A. Whaley (Tony) of Clearwater, Florida, and sons, Donald L. Shiflet (Donna) of McGaheysville, Douglas R. Gordon (Rhonda) of Suffolk, David C. Gordon (Kristi) of Easton, Pennsylvania; nine grandchildren, Kimberley (John), Ashley, Sara (Nicholas), Todd (Stacey), Chad (Briana), Lauren, Nathaniel, Emily, and Leta; and eight great-grandchildren, Regan, Jack, Grant, Elliana, Hunter, Rayne, Kayla, and Maya. He loved his family and times together. Mr. Shiflet grew up on the family farm near Churchville, where he was born. He was the owner of Shiflet Insurance, a life insurance brokerage, where over the years he worked with thousands of Valley families. His spare time was devoted to his cattle farming, a passion he nourished from youth. He especially loved his farm in Highland County, and had a lifelong interest in horses. He was a long time member of Hebron Presbyterian Church, where he served as elder. A memorial service will be held at Hebron Presbyterian Church at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 29, 2017. Burial will be private in the Hebron Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 until 7:30 p.m. Friday, July 28, 2017 in the Henry Funeral Home and also following the service at the church.
