Fred Hansford Painter

FRED H. PAINTER STAUNTON, VA Fred Hansford Painter, 90, of 1457 New Hope Road, Staunton, VA, passed away surrounded by family at Emeritus of Staunton on Dec. 25, 2012. He is survived by his wife Martha (Sis) Surface Painter with whom he celebrated 68 years of marriage on Oct. 16. He is survived by a daughter, Carolyn Ann Painter Spangler, and two sons and a daughter-in-law, James Edward and Jan Jeffreys Painter, and Ricky Lee Painter. He is also survived by five grandchildren, Kara Spangler Rosenberg of Montpelier, Vt., Katie Painter Falk, of Annapolis, MD, Phillip Painter, of Waynesboro, VA, Emily Painter Kaye, of Fredericksburg, VA, and Erin Painter of Staunton. Also surviving are 7 great grandchildren, his sister Ethel Baker, two sisters-in-law, Joyce Painter and Ruth Coffman, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was born in Augusta Country, VA on Oct. 16, 1922, son of Mattie Cash and Alexander Thomas Painter, Sr. who preceded him in death. Also preceding him in death were his older sister, Pauline Lambert, and brothers Raymond Edward Painter, and Alexander Thomas Painter, Jr. A lifelong dedication to the sheet metal and roofing industry led to his establishing Painter's Roofing and Heating, Inc., in 1962; prior to that he worked for several prominent local roofing firms. He was an active member of Annex United Methodist Church, and he served his country in the Army during WWII and the Korean Conflict. He was a charter member of Barren Ridge Annex Ruritan Club and was proud of his affiliation with Babe Ruth and Little League Baseball. The family appreciates the love and support given to Fred by the caregivers in the Emeritus Memory Care Unit. Memorial donations can be made to Annex United Methodist Church, 1570 New Hope Road, Staunton, VA 24401. Arrangements are being handled by Henry Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 pm Friday at Annex United Methodist Church, 1570 New Hope Road, Staunton, VA. A service will be held at Annex United Methodist on Saturday at 10:00 am on Saturday, officiated by Pastor Russell Heinrich, with burial to follow at Augusta Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be nephews, Daniel, Gary, Roger, Kenneth and Jeff Baker, and Stephen Lambert. Honorary pallbearers will be Forest Surface, James Lafon, Larry Wills, Johnny Lane, Stephen Shull, Edwin Flesher, Harrison Hite, Gene Garrison, Grant Brinkley, and A.C. Lawhorne.
