    GALEN SHOWALTER MYERS

    October 4, 1922 - May 7, 2013

GALEN S. MYERS Galen Showalter Myers, 90, husband of Sylvia Good Myers, of Stuarts Draft, died Tuesday, May 7, 2013 in Staunton. He was born in 1922, in Rockingham County to the late Joseph and Pearl (Showalter) Myers. Mr. Myers was preceded in death by four siblings: John J. Myers, Mary Catherine Jarrels, Nelson Myers, and Genevieve Holsinger. Galen is survived by one sibling, Loyd Myers (Bonnie). He was a member of Mt. Vernon Church of the Brethren for the last nine years, and prior to that was a long-time member of Middle River Church of the Brethren, serving on the Building Committee to build a new church and later he built the social hall. Galen graduated from Port Republic High School, and married Sylvia in 1942. He spent many years building homes in Rockingham and Augusta Counties. After retirement, he and his wife were very involved with Habitat for Humanity and Brethren Disaster Response. Galen and Sylvia lived at the Stuarts Draft Retirement Community for the last nine years, thoroughly enjoying themselves and gaining many new friends. In addition to his wife, family members include a daughter, Phyllis M. Dawson of Mechanicsville, and two sons: Robert Myers of Staunton, and Douglas Myers (Rowena) of Fort Defiance. His grandchildren are Matthew Dawson, Bradley Dawson, Laura Jean Myers, Nathan Myers (Bethany), and Naomi Karras (Justin); and two great-granddaughters, Arianna Karras and Hannah Joy Myers. The memorial service will take place Saturday at 2:30 pm at Middle River Church of the Brethren in New Hope, led by Pastor Nathan Myers, his grandson, and Pastor Randy Simmons. Private burial will be in the Middle River Church cemetery at a time prior to the memorial service. Henry Funeral Home is handling the arrangements. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mr. Myers' name to any of the following: Staunton/Augusta Habitat for Humanity, Brethren Disaster Response, or Heifer International.
