GEORGE B. HARRIS STAUNTON, VA George Bennett Harris, Jr., 85, widower of Christine "Chris" Hevener Harris, of 1600 N. Belmore Avenue, died Wednesday, November 5, 2014, at the University of Virginia Medical Center, Charlottesville. He was born August 3, 1929 in Staunton a son of the late George B., Sr., and Mabel (Wagoner) Harris. He was a graduate of Robert E. Lee High School where he played many sports. In addition to his wife of 61 years, he was also preceded in death by a special friend, Paul Christ. Family members include two daughters, Connie Harris of Dallas, Texas and Kim Harris of Staunton; a brother, James Harris of Mt. Sidney; a sister, Donna Ashby of Staunton; a sister-in-law, Alma Driver of Staunton; and many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, and great, great nieces and nephews. George was in the grocery business for 40 years. He started with Reid Stores and owned the Jiffee Mart with his late wife, Chris, for 18 years prior to his retirement. He was co-owner with his late wife, Chris, and daughter Kim of the Bit n' Bridle Tack Shop. George was a former member of the Jaycees, Glenmore Hunt Club, Elks, Staunton Dance Club and was a volunteer fireman. He was a member of St. John's United Methodist Church serving in many capacities including as a Trustee, former Chair of Church Council and was active in the United Methodist Men's Club. In past years, George and Chris were very active and involved in the horse world while their daughters were riding, competing at horse shows and fox hunting. They all owned many horses over the years including a race horse. George and Chris loved to dance and belonged to several dance clubs. George was very devoted to his family and friends. He enjoyed being active in the community and loved helping others. A funeral service will be conducted at 12 noon Tuesday, November 11, 2014, in St. John's United Methodist Church by the Rev. Taylor Mertins. A reception will follow. Burial will be at 2 p.m. in Oak Lawn Mausoleum and Memory Gardens. Active pallbearers will be David Driver, Jeff Harris, Jeff Driver, Harold Ralston, Wilford Kirby, Marshall Kirby, Victor Douglas and Maurice Smith. Honorary pallbearers will be the St. John's United Methodist Men and other friends. The family will receive friends from 7 until 9 p.m. Monday, November 10, 2014 in the Henry Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to St. John's United Methodist Church, Memorial Fund, 1716 N. Augusta Street, Staunton, VA 24401 or to Staunton Augusta Rescue Squad, 1601 North Coalter Street, Staunton, VA 24401.
