STAUNTON, VA. Guy Howard Smiley, 83, husband of Virginia Arehart Smiley, of 200 Hundley Mill Road, died Wednesday, August 20, 2014, in Shenandoah Nursing Home, Fishersville. He was born February 7, 1931, in Augusta County, a son of the late Charles Demasters and Genevive (Hodge) Smiley. Mr. Smiley was a veteran of the U.S. Marines having served during Vietnam and Korean Wars. He received the Purple Heart Medal, Korean Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, United Nations Service Medal Korea, National Defense Service Medal and the Rifle Sharpshooter Badge. Prior to retirement, Mr. Smiley was employed by the Department of Forestry where he was Chief Fire Warden for Augusta County. He was a member of Hebron Presbyterian Church. In addition to his wife of 59 years, family members include a daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and Joseph Martin of Churchville; two brothers, James W. and Bonnie Smiley and Fred A. and Brenda Smiley, all of Staunton; a sister, Mae Carpenter of Staunton; and a grandson, Jeremy Martin. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Charles Smiley, Jr., John, Robert, and Paul Smiley; and a sister, Frances Basye. A funeral service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Friday, August 22, 2014, in Hebron Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Frank Wyche. Burial will follow in Oak Lawn Mausoleum and Memory Gardens. Graveside rites will be conducted by the Augusta Staunton VFW Post 2216. Active pallbearers will be his grandson and men of the church. The family will receive friends from 6:30 until 8:30 p.m. Thursday, August 21, 2014, in the Henry Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hebron Presbyterian Church Memorial Fund, 423 Hebron Road, Staunton, VA 24401.
