STAUNTON, VA…     Harlan Hance Hinkle, Jr., 79, passed away on Saturday, November 17, 2018 at Kings Daughters Community Health and Rehab Center. He was born on September 13, 1939 in Cowan County, West Virginia, a son of the late Harlan Hance, Sr. and Evelena (Ramsey) Hinkle. Mr. Hinkle was the second of five children born to Harlan H., Sr. and Evelena Hinkle of Camden-on-Gauley in Webster County. He is a 1962 graduate of West Virginia University, a U. S. Air Force veteran, and the father of five children. An avid Civil War buff since childhood, he tired of reading the cookie-cutter versions of West Virginia’s role in the Civil War and decided to set the record straight with his book Grayback Mountaineers. Surviving family members include his children, Virginia Hinkle and husband Dale of Harrisonburg, Cheryl Hinkle Chiu and husband John of Hawaii, Bonnie Brown of Staunton and former son-in-law, Kenneth Brown of Fishersville, Karen Thomas and husband Richard of Texas, and Eric Hinkle of Colorado; two sisters, Judy Fulk and husband Bob of Kentucky, and Patricia Olson of Eastern Shore; six grandchildren and three great grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Gail Hinkle of Ohio; and his ex-wife, Bonnie Gaye Hinkle of Harrisonburg; two step-grandchildren, seven nieces and nephews; and seventeen great nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by a brother, Jerry Hinkle; and a sister Jean Skeens. Burial will be private. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of the Shenandoah, c/o Augusta Health Foundation, P.O.
