Harriet Trott Sandy

STAUNTON, VA Harriet Trott Sandy, 71, of Staunton, Va., passed away peacefully at her home on Friday, March 13, 2015 following a lengthy illness, surrounded by her family. Born April 12, 1943, in Staunton, she was the daughter of the late Sydney E. Trott and Katharine Wilson Trott. Harriet graduated from Robert E. Lee High School in 1962 and the University of Virginia School of Radiology in 1964. She worked as an X-ray Technician at Kings Daughters Hospital and Augusta Health Center for a total of 36 years. Harriet was a devout member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church and was very active with the church's Helping Hands Circle. She also loved playing bridge and mahjong with her close friends and taking lively and memorable vacations in Nags Head, N.C. with both her immediate and extended family. She was a world traveler and lived several years in China, the Philippines, Ecuador, Australia, and several other cities in the U.S.; however, she always considered Staunton to be home. A caring and loving mother to her two daughters, Harriet was always ready to impart pearls of wisdom for living, including one of her favorites, "You can always spot a lady." Harriet was courageous and firm in her faith throughout her illness and despite being sick was still able to dole out sage advice like "Let go and let God." She was preceded in death by her brother, Thomas B. Trott. Surviving are her husband of 34 years, Eugene Russell Sandy; daughter Anne Wilson Sandy of Houston, Texas; daughter Jaqueline (Jackie) H. Ware, her husband, Christopher Ware, and two grandchildren, Katharine Ware and Cameron Ware, all of Arlington, Va.; and a brother, Sydney (Eddie) Trott of Staunton, Va. She was lovingly known to her brothers as "Wa Wa" and as "Nai Nai" by her grandchildren. Following cremation and a private burial service at Thornrose Cemetery, a memorial service will be at St. Paul's United Methodist Church at 11:00 AM Saturday, March 21st with the Revs. Wade Munford, T. Bryson Smith, and Barbara Sawyer officiating. Music will be provided by Kathy Lafon, a close family friend. Family also will receive visitors at Henry Funeral Home, 1030 W. Beverley St., Staunton, from 6:00 PM- 8:00 PM on Friday, March 20th. Memorials may be directed to St Paul's Methodist Church, 2000 Shutterlee Mill Road, Staunton, Va. 24401. "The dust returns to earth as it was, and the spirit returns to God, who gave it."
