HENRY MYERS CHURCHVILLE, VA Henry Myers, of Churchville, Virginia, died Wednesday at age 80, passing away peacefully in his sleep. A grandfather, professor, and farmer, he leaves behind wife Nancy; sister Margaret; children Theresa, Daniel, Lisa, and Allen; and seven grandchildren. Born February 6, 1934 in Hagerstown, Maryland, he attended Swarthmore College, where he met Nancy, whom he married in 1955. He lived many places--Germany, where he served in the Army's Counterintelligence Corps; Massachusetts, where he earned a master's degree from Boston University, a Ph.D. from Brandeis University, and a professorship at Lowell Technological Institute; and Austria, for post-doctoral studies--before making his home in the Shenandoah Valley. Since 1977, he has resided at Elk Run Stables in Churchville, Virginia, where he has kept horses, sheep, cattle, and poultry, enjoying farm life to the fullest. An avid equestrian, he enjoyed foxhunting with Middlebrook Hounds, steeplechasing, trail riding, and leading his grandchildren on pony rides. He also enjoyed fishing, both in Virginia rivers and in the coastal waters of North Carolina's Outer Banks. As a professor at James Madison University, he taught History and Political Science for forty-one years, from 1969 until his retirement in 2010, earning the Carl Harter Distinguished Teacher Award in 2003. He published numerous books and articles, most recently The Book of Emperors published in 2013. The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 9:00 P.M. on Sunday, March 23 in the Henry Funeral Home in Staunton. A funeral service will be held on Monday, March 24 at 2:00 P.M. at Tinkling Spring Presbyterian Church in Fishersville.
