HERMAN R. BUCHANAN MIDDLEBROOK, VA Herman Rufus Buchanan, 86, husband of Armenia (Helmick) Buchanan, of 1111 Summerdean Road, went to be with Jesus on Thursday, March 15, 2012, at his residence. He was born October 20, 1925, in Augusta County, a son of the late Thomas Oliver and Maude (Puckett) Buchanan. Mr. Buchanan retired in 1988 from V.D.O.T. He originally was a farmer. He attended Laurel Hill Full Gospel Church. He was an active church member, a Sunday School Superintendent, Deacon, and Trustee. He enjoyed growing and sharing his beautiful flowers. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. In addition to his wife, whom he married on December 21, 1946, family members include four sons and three daughters-in-law, Donnie Buchanan of the home, Ronnie and Esther Buchanan of Verona, Lonnie and Dottie Buchanan of McKinley, and Marcus and Peggy Buchanan of Stuarts Draft; two daughters and sons-in-law, Glenda and Billy Strickler of Staunton, and Alice and Dickie McLain of Middlebrook; a brother and sister-in-law, Lawrence Almo and Ruby Buchanan of Barren Ridge; eight grandchildren, Dwight Strickler and his wife, Mandy, Jay Strickler and his wife, Ashley, Scott Buchanan and his wife, Tabitha, H. A. Buchanan and his wife, Natalie, Greg Strickler, Andy Buchanan, Timmy Buchanan, and Amanda Shipp and her husband, Michael; eight great grandchildren, Tiffany, Kristy, Jordan, and Trenton Strickler, Colton, Emma, and Caleb Buchanan, and Chloe Auville; and a number of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a stillborn daughter in 1958, Nina Marie Buchanan; six brothers, Oliver, Henry, Walter, Wavley, James, and Ervin Buchanan; five sisters, Florence Ardenia Strickler, Juanita Patterson, Lorraine Lotts-Zink, Cardell Strickler, and Margaret Odessa Riley. A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, March 19, 2012, at Laurel Hill Full Gospel Church by the Revs. William Strickler and Peter Grimm. Burial will follow at Oak Lawn Mausoleum and Memory Gardens. Active pallbearers will be his grandsons, Dwight, Jay, and Greg Strickler, Scott, H.A., Andy, and Timmy Buchanan. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. H. Lynn Moore, Jimmy Cason, Charles Buchanan, David Buchanan, Jonathan Wells, Justin Roadcap, Hansford Patterson, Cletus Wiseman, Mandy Shipp, Michael Shipp, Jim Beita, Robert Cason, Tiffany Strickler, Kristy Strickler, Jordan Strickler, and Colton Buchanan. The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 p.m. on Sunday, March 18, 2012, in the Henry Funeral Home and other times at the residence. Memorials may be made to the Mission Fund of Laurel Hill Full Gospel Church, 53 Adams Lane, Verona, VA 24482. A special heartful appreciation is extended to Dr. Lynn Moore and his wife, Eloise for his care and their special visits.
