HELEN R. HANGER MIDDLEBROOK, VA… Helen Dew (Root) Hanger, 100, widow of Ernest Hanger, Jr., of Middlebrook, died Sunday, February 10, 2019, in The Laurels of Charlottesville. She was born April 28, 1918, in Daniel, Virginia a daughter of the late Kenneth Donovan and Elva (Armstrong) Root. She was a member of Old Providence ARP Church. Helen was a dedicated farmer’s wife and mother, who worked tirelessly from sun up to sundown to provide for her family. She loved to quilt, cook, can, and was an expert flower and vegetable gardener. She was loved and will be missed dearly, but not forgotten. In addition to her husband, she was also preceded in death by a son, Herman Hanger; four sisters, Evelyn Wright, Nellie Hamilton, Edith Grimm, and Madeline Burns; and five brothers, Eugene Root, Jack Root, Joe Root, Claude Root, and Ralph Root. Family members include her children, Joan Poole (Bill), Dennis Hanger (Jerry), Ruby Curnish, and Glenn Hanger (Laurin); a daughter-in-law, Faye Hanger; a brother, John Root (Beulah); 10 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, and a great, great grandchild. Helen is also survived by dear friends, Ruth Jenkins and Leo Constantini. A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, February 14, 2019, in Old Providence ARP Church Cemetery, Spottswood, Virginia by the Rev. Patrick Malphrus. The family will receive friends from 5 until 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, February 13, 2019, in the Henry Funeral Home.
