JANET S. CLEMENT STAUNTON, VA Janet Elizabeth Sutherland Clement, 89, passed away on Wednesday afternoon, December 4, 2013, at Brightview Baldwin Park, Staunton VA. Formerly of Lynchburg VA for 51 years, she moved to Staunton following the 2011 death of her beloved husband, Robert Ray Clement, to whom she was married for 67 years. Born July 31, 1924 in Middletown, New York, she was the oldest daughter of the late Earl William Sutherland and Florence Esther Brady Sutherland, originally of Fort Plain and Ellenville NY. She is survived by two sons and two daughters, nineteen grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents and her husband, she was predeceased in 2012 by her second daughter, Priscilla Clement Johnson, of Lynchburg VA and in 2011 by a daughter-in-law, Judithann Augustus Clement, of Waynesboro PA. Growing up in Middletown NY, Janet was a 1942 graduate of Middletown High School where she served as the high school reporter for the Middletown Times Herald, earning ten cents per copy line. She became the school's first female class president for her sophomore year, and was the recipient of the 1942 NY State DAR Leadership-Scholarship Award, representing New York State at the national convention in Chicago. In addition, during her high school years, Janet was employed as a clerk at Woolworth's earning 22 cents per hour, and was the founding member of the Sub Debs social club which partnered for social events with The Rangers Boys Club, establishing life-long friendships among its members. Janet continued her education at Cornell University, taking one semester off to marry her college sweetheart, Robert Ray Clement, on January 1, 1944, prior to his 1944-45 World War II service as a Lieutenant in the Navy. Resuming her studies while her husband was serving his country, Janet graduated from Cornell in December 1946 with the Bachelor of Science degree in Home Economics. Following World War II, Janet and her husband moved to Syracuse NY for his employment with General Electric. Prior to starting their family and becoming a full-time homemaker, Janet was employed by the Syracuse Board of Education as a night school instructor and as a nursery school teacher. In 1960 the family moved to Lynchburg VA. In the mid-60's Janet was employed by the Lynchburg School District as a substitute teacher, and in 1969 began employment with the Virginia Tech Cooperative Extension Service as a Home Economics and 4-H Extension Agent for the Campbell County Extension Office in Rustburg VA, retiring in 1982. During her lifetime Janet was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Middletown NY, First Presbyterian Church of Syracuse NY where she helped found and organize the Cherub Children's Choir, and First Presbyterian Church of Lynchburg VA. Throughout her life Janet enjoyed sewing projects, baking and cooking, collecting antiques, and letter writing. Janet is survived by her older son Jonathan Whitehill Clement of Churchville VA and his five children: Catherine Clement Galardo and husband Tony, Jonathan W. Clement, Jr. and wife Lauren, Melanie Elizabeth Clement, Christopher Robert Clement, Margaret Lonsdale Clement; oldest daughter Barbara Clement Storey and husband Martin of Greenville SC and their three children: Emily Storey Hess and husband Jim, Matthew Clement Storey and wife Tianna, Caitlin Storey Hunter and husband Marshall; her younger son, David Sutherland Clement of Waynesboro PA and his nine children: Theresa Lauraine Clement, Paul Augustus Clement, Jessica Eileen Clement, James David Sutherland Clement, Laura Elizabeth Clement, Robert Charles Clement, Luke Alexander Clement, Maria Judithann Clement, Thomas Joseph Clement; younger daughter Martha Clement McDonough and husband Steve of Staunton VA and their two children: Steven Tyler McDonough and Blair Elizabeth McDonough. Janet is survived by seven great-grandchildren: Brandon Galardo, Gabriella Diane Galardo, Alyssa Christine Galardo, Christian James Clement, Hannah Catherine Hess, Sophia Storey Hess, and Emma Kate Hess. In addition to her children and grandchildren, Janet is survived by her younger sister, Lois Sutherland Johnston of Cockeysville MD and her two children, her sister-in-law Priscilla Alden Clement Rice of Naples FL and her three children, and by her son-in-law David Ray Johnson of Lynchburg VA. She was also pre-deceased by brothers-in-law James Stewart Johnston and Gordon Millard Clement. A funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. on Saturday, December 7, 2013, in the Henry Funeral Home Chapel, 1030 W. Beverley Street, Staunton, VA by Chaplain Murphy Terry. A graveside service will follow at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, December 7, 2013, in Virginia Memorial Park, Forest, VA. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. on Friday, December 6, 2013, in the Henry Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Shenandoah, P.O.
