JANICE S. LOTZ STAUNTON, VA Janice Elizabeth (Spencer) Lotz, 70, wife of John Lotz, died November 10, 2014 at Augusta Health. She was the daughter of the late William Henry Spencer and the late Kathleen Borgeson Spencer. Jan was born November 5, 1944, in Birmingham, Alabama. The family moved to Marietta, GA, a few years later. She graduated from Osborne High School in Marietta and then went to the University of Georgia in Athens, GA. She earned a Bachelor's Degree in social work and a Master's Degree in counseling from UGA. She lived and worked in Athens for several years, mostly in the social work field. She moved to Virginia in 1976, working at Jackson Feild Episcopal Home for Girls in Emporia, VA. She moved to Staunton in 1977, taking a position at the Group Home for Girls. After experiencing burnout in this field, she used her many and varied talents and abilities in other jobs. She worked at a floral designer at several local businesses, including Terry Court Florist and Flowers by Jay. Later, she worked in food service at Mary Baldwin College, the Belle Grae Inn, and at the Monroe Institute in Nelson County, VA, where she was Food Service Director. Her last and best job was a secretary at Blue Ridge Appraisal Company in Staunton. She retired from Blue Ridge at the end of 2011 with 15 years of service. In her spare time, Jan enjoyed planting and cultivating flowers and shrubs in her yard, spending time with her family, playing board games, reading, playing computer games, and watching TV. She is survived by her husband, John of 34 years, of Staunton; by a sister, Cathy Wright and her husband Mickey Wright, of Winston, GA; a brother, Bill Spencer and his wife Tracy Spencer, of Marietta, GA; sister-in-law, Debbie Walker and her husband Jon Walker, of Kernersville, NC; sister-in-law, Sue Schwarting and her husband Rick Schwarting, of Smithfield, VA. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Thomas Spencer. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews. She also leaves behind her beloved cats, Apollo and Aphrodite. Burial will be private in Cheatham Hill Cemetery in Marietta, GA. A memorial service will be conducted at 10 a.m. on Monday, November 17, 2014 at Emmanuel Episcopal Church by the Rev. Shelby Owen. Memorial contributions should be made to Augusta County SPCA, 33 Archery Lane, Staunton, VA 24401. Henry Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
