JOANN WHITEMANSTAUNTON, VA… Mrs. Joann W. Whiteman of Staunton passed away peacefully after a short illness on April 18. Mrs. Whiteman is survived by her husband of 65 years, Donald G. Whiteman; two daughters and sons-in-law, Nancy (Richard) Headifen  and Wendy (Warren) White, all of Staunton. Also surviving are three grandchildren, Wesley White of Richmond, Wilson White of Massanutten, and Whitney White (William Jr.) Vaughn; and two great grandchildren, Emerson Vaughn and Liam Vaughn, all of Charlottesville; brothers-in-law, Ralph  (Martha) Whiteman of Illinois and Richard (Harriet) of Tennessee; and several nieces and nephews in Illinois and Florida. Preceding Mrs. Whiteman in death were her two precious sons, Tom and Doug.Prior to moving to Staunton in 1999, the Whitemans had resided in Scottsdale, Arizona for 28 years. Prior to that, they had lived in Palos Verdes Estates, California; Prairie Village, Kansas; Lake Forest, Illinois, LaGrange, Illinois and Boston. Mrs. Whiteman, the former Joann Weakly, was born June 5, 1928, to Rex and Ruth Weakly in Waukegan, Illinois. She was a 1950 graduate of Monmouth (Illinois) College, where she met her future husband, and was active in many campus activities, including presidencies of the Dolphin (women’s swimming) Club, Pep Club, and Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority.She was a member of Covenant Presbyterian Church, Staunton, and over the years she had been active in P.E.O., AAUW (Association of American University Women), Kappa Kappa Gamma alumnae, Girl Scout and Cub Scout leadership, and various other civic and church related activities. In Arizona, she had been president of Greenteriours, Inc., a provider of interior plants to offices, financial institutions, municipalities, etc. She was an avid gardener and an accomplished quilter. She also enjoyed tennis, golfing and swimming. She and her husband had resided in Baldwin Park Retirement Community in Staunton since 2010.  A memorial service will be held at Covenant Presbyterian Church on Saturday, May 7, at 2 p.m., with family visitation following the service. The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, memorials can be sent to the Building Fund at Covenant Presbyterian Church or a scholarship at Monmouth College, Monmouth Illinois, that has been established in her name. Henry Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
