JOHN E. HESS MT. SIDNEY, VA John Edward "Ed" Hess, 89, husband of Dorothy Kathleen (Eutsler) Hess, of Mt. Sidney, died Wednesday, February 6, 2013, in King's Daughters' Nursing and Rehab Center, Staunton. He was born August 31, 1923, in Mt. Sidney, a son of the late John David and Ruth (Rankin) Hess. Mr. Hess was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during World War II. He was in the European Theatre, The Phillipines, and Japan when the war was over as Occupation Troops. He was stationed in Nagasaki where the Atomic Bomb was dropped. Prior to retirement, he was employed by DuPont with 36 ½ years of service. Woodworking was one of his favorite hobbies and he was sure to make everyone happy when he made them a special gift. He enjoyed his Church choir, especially singing with his daughters growing up. In addition to his wife, family members include three daughters and sons-in-law, Brenda and Jim Orebaugh, Sue and Ronnie Whisman, and Judy and Don Myers; four grandchildren, Tammy and Jeff Dietz, Matt Whisman, Jamie and Jamie Orebaugh, and Mandy and David Callison; three great grandchildren, Megan and Bradley Brown, Jacob Callison, and Madison Orebaugh; and one great-great grandchild, Mason Brown. He was preceded in death by four sisters, Ora Hess, Arlene Beverage, Margaret Rowe, and Katherine Mitts; and a brother, Tom Hess. A funeral service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday, February 9, 2013, at Verona United Methodist Church by the Rev. Bob Weeks and Pastor Don Simmons. Burial will follow in Oak Lawn Mausoleum and Memory Gardens. Graveside rites will be conducted by the Augusta- Staunton VFW Post 2216. Active pallbearers will be Larry Moore, Paul Harris, Steve Mitts, Jimmy Long, Ronnie Broce, Larry Wills, Pete Reeves, and Doug Mitchell. Honorary pallbearers will be the New Hope Chorus Members, Charles Leach, Mike Baker, Chip Baker, Johnnie Sensabaugh, and Dr. Kerry Alexander. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Friday, February 8, 2013, in the Henry Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Legacy Hospice, 1842 Jefferson Highway Fishersville, VA 22939.
