JOHN M. KIGER STAUNTON, VA…John Matthew Kiger died peacefully at The Legacy at North Augusta on October 1, 2016, in Staunton at the age of 61. John is survived by his wife, Amy Laser Kiger; a son, Jackson Thomas Kiger; and sisters, Susan Victoria Kiger (Midlothian, VA) and Jeanne Jackson Kiger (Bristol, VA). He is also survived by his parents-in-law, Thomas Alva Laser and Sara Mae Laser (Gettysburg, PA), as well as his brother-in-law, Mark Thomas Laser and wife, Kathleen F. Laser (Carlisle, PA). He was preceded in death by his parents, Leonard Jackson Kiger and Dorothy Virginia (Stover) Kiger (Staunton, VA). John was born on September 19, 1955, in Staunton, VA to Leonard and Dorothy. He graduated from Robert E. Lee High School in 1974 and from Ferrum College and Virginia Tech with a degree in Business Administration in 1979. He married Amy, the Executive Director of the Blue Ridge Community College Educational Foundation, on May 15, 1999. For nearly 30 years, John was employed by the City of Waynesboro, most recently as the Real Estate Assessor. He was an active member of the Virginia Association of Assessing Officers and a former member of the Waynesboro Kiwanis Club. John and Amy’s son, Jackson, was born on April 3, 2003. Jackson remembers John as a loving father and a wonderful role model and enjoyed the time that his father spent as his basketball coach. John took great pride in caring for his home and property high atop a tree-shaded hill in Staunton. He was an avid golfer and basketball player who enjoyed following Virginia Tech athletics as well as the Washington Wizards. John truly enjoyed spending time with family and friends and loved the people of his home town. He also enjoyed traveling, highlighted by special trips to the Outer Banks, Bermuda, Smith Mountain Lake, Niagara Falls, and the Grand Canyon. John was a member of the Second Presbyterian Church of Staunton and, more recently, Christ Lutheran Church of Staunton. A funeral service will be conducted at 11:30 a.m. Friday, October 7, 2016, at Christ Lutheran Church by the Rev. Robert McCarty. Burial will follow in Thornrose Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 until 9 p.m. Thursday, October 6, 2016, in the Henry Funeral Home and from 10 until 11 a.m. Friday, in the church. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to make donations in memory of John may consider Blue Ridge Community College Educational Foundation (P.O. Box 80, Weyers Cave, VA 24486), the Staunton-Augusta YMCA (708 N. Coalter Street, Staunton, VA 24401), or the Augusta Health Foundation (P.O. Box 1000, Fishersville, VA 22939). The family would like to thank the staff at Augusta Health Radiation Oncology; the staff at The Legacy at North Augusta; caregivers Rolando Smith, Vanessa Marshall, and Tiffany Randolph; and all the many wonderful friends who have supported them during John’s illness.
