JOHN E. SAYERS   John Elton Sayers, 89, passed away on Monday, October 23, 2017 at home with his family around him.  He lived in Staunton with his daughter Andrea, and on the family farm in McDowell.  John was born in Pulaski County and was the last surviving child of Benton and Georgia Sayers. He lost Catherine, the love of his life for 66 years, in 2015.  He is survived by Andrea, his son John and his wife Joan of Staunton and grandsons Andy and his wife Shelli of Christiansburg, and Charlie of Fredericksburg. He is also survived by two beautiful great granddaughters Lily and Virginia.  He had a loving extended family within the community. John served in the 88th Infantry Division in Italy as part of the TRUST forces.  John worked for VDOT for 42 years and retired as a survey party chief.  He was an avid outdoorsman who loved to hunt and fish. For over 40 years he had a small farm in Highland County.  He was well known for making maple syrup, gardening and woodworking.  John was a long time active member of Marquis Memorial United Methodist Church and a member of the Staunton Civic Club. The family will receive visitors at Henry Funeral Home on Friday, October 27 from 6-8 pm.  A memorial service will be held at Marquis Memorial Church on Saturday, October 28 at 2:00 pm. His and Catherine’s ashes will be spread together at the family farm at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be given to Marquis Memorial or the charity/church of your choice.
