JOHN G. WOODDELL  STAUNTON, VA… John G. Wooddell, 82, who retired as a member of the Central Intelligence Agency’s Senior Intelligence Service in 1992, died Sunday, February 5, 2017 at his residence. Mr. Wooddell was born in Buckhannon, WV.  A graduate of West Virginia University, he joined the CIA in 1962 after serving five years in the U.S. Navy as an Intelligence Officer.  Mr. Wooddell served his entire CIA career in the Directorate of Intelligence where he retired as a senior manager in the Office of Imagery Analysis.  During his career, he attended the U.S. Naval War College in Newport, RI in 1972 and the Royal College of Defence Studies in London, England in 1986.  He also received the CIA’s Career Intelligence Medal. Mr. Wooddell retired from the U.S. Naval Reserve as an intelligence officer, with the rank of Captain, in 1980. A former resident of Springfield, VA, he moved to Staunton in 1993.  He was a volunteer guide at the Museum of Frontier Culture and a member of Kiwanis and the Military Officers Association of America.  Mr. Wooddell was a longtime member and Elder of Bethel Presbyterian Church. Survivors include his wife, Amanda Alice Wooddell; two sons, Dr. John D. Wooddell and wife, Carol, of Springfield and Dr. William S. Wooddell and wife, Patty, of Chesapeake; five grandchildren; and two great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Phyllis Garrettson Wooddell. A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, February 8, 2017 in the Henry Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. Joe Condro. Burial will be at a later date in Arlington National Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association Central and Western Virginia Chapter, 1160 Pepsi Place, Suite 306, Charlottesville, VA 22901.
