JOSEPH R. COURTNEY STAUNTON, VA Joseph Russell Courtney, 94, widower of Clara (Southard) Courtney, of 31 Woodlee Road, died Friday, August 9, 2013, at Brightview at Baldwin Park. He was born November 29, 1918, in Waynesboro, a son of the late William Burman and Annie (Smith) Courtney. Mr. Courtney was a veteran of the U.S. Army. Prior to retirement, he was employed by Staunton Fruit and Produce with over 30 years of service. He was a member of Waynesboro Church of the Brethren. He was a devout Redskins fan and enjoyed working with his loyal customers and the public in the produce business. In addition to his wife, he was also preceded in death by a sister, Henrietta Henkel, who passed away on August 7, 2013. Family members include a daughter, Betty Jo Pallavicini of Waynesboro; a brother and sister-in-law, Frank and Millie Courtney of Florida; a granddaughter, Molly Pallavicini of Staunton; his best friend, George Harris; and other relatives, Nancy Botkin, Janet Botkin, and Brittany Botkin. A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, August 13, 2013, in the Henry Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Todd Crowder. Burial will follow in Thornrose Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Eric Wade, George Harris, Scott Carr, Donny Southard, Martin Moskowitz, Don Cacciapaglia, and Mike "Junior" Myrtle. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. The family wishes to send a special thank you to the staff of Legacy Hospice and Brightview for their love and kindness. And also a special thanks to his long term physician, Dr. Douglas Degen. Memorials may be made to Waynesboro Church of the Brethren, 364 Bridge Ave., Waynesboro, VA 22980.
