SWOOPE, VA… Joseph “Joe” Shomo, 82, of 676 Haytie Lane, passed away Saturday, October 8, 2016, at his residence. He was born on July 31, 1934 in Staunton, a son of the late Joseph Hunter and Jessie Agnes (Rosen) Shomo. Prior to retirement, Mr. Shomo was employed by Planters Bank for 44 years, where he retired as Senior Vice President. Mr. Shomo spent the majority of his life devoted to agriculture and the beef farming industry. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Agnes (Shomo) Dodson; a sister, Peggy Jean Shomo Joyner and her husband, Douglas Mercer Joyner; and a sister-in-law, Shirley Supple Shomo. Family members include a son, Joseph Dayton Shomo (Chad); a brother, Charles Hunter Shomo; a son-in-law, Kevin William Dodson; four grandchildren, Kristin Marie Shomo Ailer, Mary Kaitlyn Shomo Hutchinson, Joseph Hunter Shomo II and Hannah Faith Dodson; and two great grandchildren, Lennox Marie Ailer and Sutton Grace Hutchinson. He also is survived by a special friend and business partner, Sam Leonard. A graveside service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 12, 2016 at Hebron Presbyterian Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., on Tuesday, October 11, 2016 at the residence. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation, 230 East Ohio Street, Suite 500, Chicago, IL 60611 or to the American Cancer Society, 1445 E.
