Josephine Alma “Jo Ann” (Burns) Hartigan Fitzgerald, 83, of Staunton, died Wednesday, March 2, 2016 at Shenandoah Nursing Home. She was born October 3, 1932, in Augusta County, daughter of the late Ray and Stella (Waybright) Burns. Prior to retirement, she was a private duty nurse for 22 years. Family members include two special daughters, Mary Alice Drumheller and Gail Hite; a special son, James Simmons; four sisters, Mae Eppard of Gloucester, Mary Simmons of Staunton, Bonnie Burnette and Linda Dinges, both of Waynesboro; and a special niece, Sandy Swisher. In addition to her first husband, Lucian Allen Hartigan, she was preceded in death by her second husband, Chester Fitzgerald, and two sisters, Nancy B. Furr and Judy B. Tomlin. A funeral service will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 5, 2016 in the Henry Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Merle Fisher. Burial will follow in Oaklawn Mausoleum and Memory Gardens. Active pallbearers will be Carol Burnette, Glenn Swisher, and James Simmons. The family will receive friends from 7 until 8 p.m. on Friday, March 4, 2016 in the funeral home.
