    December 3, 1929 - May 17, 2021

    Joe D Hodges, 91, husband of the late Joanne Elizabeth Rhodes Hodges of Staunton, VA, died Monday, May 17, 2021 living with his son in Windermere, Florida. He was born December 3, 1929 in Covington, VA, a son of the late Letcher Boyd and Cora Ellen Gooden Hodges. He grew up in Covington, VA and married Joanne May 24, 1952. They moved to Staunton, VA in 1958. He worked for People’s Life Insurance, Callison & Co. Insurance and himself until his early 70’s. He was a First Sergeant in the Army Reserves for 9 years, including the Korean War years. He loved and played basketball, baseball/softball, and golf. He golfed at his home course, Gypsy Hill Golf Course, until the age of 90, played basketball at Covington High School and in the 35 and older league in Staunton until the age of 68. He also coached and played basketball in Staunton’s church league. He loved fishing and building/flying radio control airplanes. He never lost his appetite for a good meal as he loved to eat. Joe is survived by his two sons and daughters-in-law, Joe (Joey) D, Jr and Paula Hodges and David Neal and Deana Hodges, 2 grandchildren, Anna Louise and husband Michael Skupin and Joe (Joey) D Hodges, III, 1 great grandchild, Jamison Skupin, 6 nephews, Ray Winfred Hodges, Jr, Robert Benson, George (Roddy) and Barbara Hodges, James (Jimmy) Hodges and Gretchen Overstreet, William (Billy) and Martha Hodges, and Steve and Marcia Hodges, 4 nieces, Anne Benson, Sue Ellen and husband Stuart Dameron, Robin Duncan and Julie Lawson and several great nephews and nieces. Joe was predeceased by his 6 brothers, Winfred (Weenie) Hodges, Letcher Boyd, Jr (LB/Beans) Hodges, William Hodges, George Hodges, Jack Hodges and James (Jimmy) Hodges, 2 sisters Ruby Benson and Juanita (Nita) Bailey, 3 nephews Teddy Benson, Tommy Carpenter and Leonard (Lenny) Hodges and 3 nieces, Eloise Hodges, Merrie Bruce Bishop and Jackie Wyatt Viewing will be held Sunday, May 23, 2021 between 5:00pm and 7:00pm at Henry Funeral Home, Staunton. Funeral service will be held at St Johns United Methodist Church, Staunton, with a graveside service following on Monday, May 24, 2021 at 12:00pm. Active Pallbearers will be: Anna Skupin, Joey Hodges III, Roddy Hodges, Billy Hodges, Steve Hodges, Eric Cobb, Edwin Eagle and Richard Shute Honorary Pallbearers: Jimmy Hodges and Bill Puffenbarger Henry Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
