Waynesboro, VA… Dr. John G. Wangler , Jr, 81, husband of Harriet (Buck) Wangler, died Sunday morning, June 9, 2019 in the Summit Square Retirement Community, where he had been residing. He was born on July 25, 1937, in Washington D.C., a son of the late John G. and Mildred (Keith) Wangler. Doctor Wangler received a B.S. degree in Chemistry from American University and a M.S. degree in Pharmacology from George Washington University. In 1964 he graduated from the University of Virginia School of Medicine. He interned at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta, GA, and did his psychiatric residency at the University of North Carolina. From 1968 until 1970 he served with the U.S. Public Health Service in Lexington, KY. He was employed by Western State Hospital for 30 years. He was a member of the American Psychiatric Association and the Augusta County Medical Society. He was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church. In addition to his wife, to whom he was married on September 22, 1964; survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Melanie (Wangler) Campbell and Dr. Joseph C. Campbell, Jr. of Danville; a son and daughter-in-law, John Alan Wangler and Jeanie (Coiner) Wangler of Fishersville; seven grandchildren, Joseph C. III, Katherine E., and John C. Campbell; Jonathan A., Hannah E., Selah G., and Jake T. Wangler; a sister, Martha Ryan of Richmond, a niece and a nephew. He was preceded in death by a sister, Mildred Leffel. A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m., Tuesday, June 11, 2019, at Monticello Memory Gardens in Charlottesville, by Mrs. Jenny Lucas, Chaplain of Summit Square. Donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 1445 E. Rio Rd., Suite 104, Charlottesville, VA, 22901. The family would like to express deep appreciation for the excellent care and compassion shown to John, while a patient on the health care floor by Dr. Christopher Heck and the nursing staff of Summit Square.
