Lena Parks Mahone, 79, passed away on Monday, February 1, 2016 at King’s Daughters’ Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.  She was born Sunday, August 30, 1936, the only child of Lemuel Hiram Mahone, Jr. and Myrtie Belle Pugh Mahone.  She was named for her grandmothers.  She lived most of her entire life in the house in which she was born near Spottswood, Virginia. She was a lifelong member of Greenville United Methodist Church which she joined on Easter Sunday, April 21, 1946.  She served as a church treasurer for many years, and in various other positions, was a member of United Methodist Women where she served in several offices in local, district, and conference organizations.  She was actively engaged in the Emmaus Movement and in mission programs. Throughout the years she was also active in several civic and professional clubs.  She was a member of National Association of Active and Retired Federal Employees, AARP, and Valley Women’s Connection and was a former member of Business of Professional Women and Woman’s Christian Temperance Union.  She enjoyed handcrafts, art work, writing, reading, using her computer, and travel.  She graduated from Spottswood High School in 1954 and Madison College, now James Madison University, with a BS degree in Education, concentrations in history and art, in 1958.  She taught in primary grades in Staunton and in Frederick County.  For 25 years she worked with the Department of Agriculture, Farmers Home Administration, later Rural Development, in Augusta, Highland, Bath and Rockbridge Counties.  She retired as County Loan Program Technician on November 30, 1996.  She volunteered in a number of positions such as in the Augusta County Historical Society and as a director of the Fairfield Senior Citizen group.  She had traveled extensively in nearly all of the United States and in a number of foreign countries. She is survived by cousins and friends. A funeral will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. on Friday in Greenville United Methodist Church by the Rev. Kevin Haynes.  The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service and also immediately following the burial.  Burial will be in the church cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to Greenville United Methodist Church Mission Funds, P.O. Box 250, Greenville, VA 24440. Henry Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
