LEONARD B. MCCRAY, JR. STAUNTON, VA… Leonard Baxter McCray, Jr., husband of Velda (Simmons) McCray, of 366 National Ave., died Monday, October 16, 2017, at his residence. He was born August 20, 1925, in Raphine, a son of the late Leonard Baxter, Sr., and Edith (Almond) McCray. Mr. McCray was a veteran of the U.S. Army with the 14th Field Observation Battalion, having served during World War II.Prior to retirement, Leonard was employed by Hajoca Corp. with 44 years of service in industrial sales. He was a member of the Church of the Good Shepard, where he served on the vestry for years as Jr. Warden, as a trustee, usher, and bell ringer. He served on the Agriculture and Forestal Advisory Committee for the City of Staunton and was a member of the Staunton American Legion Post 13. He enjoyed turkey hunting, fishing, and worked part time raising Angus cattle. In addition to his wife, family members include a daughter, Suzanne McCray of Chapel Hill, North Carolina; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Todd McCray of Harrisonburg and Brian and Stacey McCray of Louisa; a brother, Henry McCray of Rockville; a sister, Margaret Robertson of Simpsonville, South Carolina; and three grandchildren, Avery Grace McCray, Mason and Benjamin McCray. He was preceded in death by four brothers and five sisters. A graveside service will be conducted at 12 noon on Saturday, October 21, 2017, in Thornrose Cemetery by the Rev. David Elphee. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at Henry Funeral Home and other times at the residence. Memorials may be made to Church of the Good Shepherd, Building Fund, 809 Lee Jackson Highway, Staunton, VA 24401.
