Mabel Virginia (Whitesell) Campbell

MABEL W. CAMPBELL  STAUNTON, VA…  Mabel Virginia (Whitesell) Campbell 85, of 456 Stuarts Draft Hwy, Staunton, Virginia went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, October 3, 2017.  Now that she can walk again, she ran to meet her loved ones waiting to greet her into heaven; her parents, the late Wayt H. Whitesell and Charlene McLear Whitesell, her husband, John T. (Jack) Campbell, and her beloved daughter, Brenda.  Also, her four brothers, Russell, Fred, Wayt Jr., and Paul Whitesell and two sisters, Helen Cash and Shirley Murphy.  Mabel was born June 22, 1932 in Greenville, Virginia, where she resided her entire life.  She married Jack on July 31, 1950 and together they started a family while living and working on the family farm.  Mabel loved unconditionally and sacrificially devoted her life to caring for and nurturing her family.  Left to cherish her memory is her daughter, Jane Wilson of Staunton, sons Joe (Becky) Campbell of Vesuvius, John Campbell and Wayt (Tammy) Campbell of the home; grandchildren, Stephanie (Todd) Wade, Ann (Anthony) Nelson, Stephen (Lindsay) Campbell, Amy (Keith) Fields, Jennifer (Brian) Campbell, Michael (Cassidy) Campbell, Finley (Mackenzie) Campbell, and Brittany (Chris) Black; great-grandchildren Ty, Dylan, Hunter, Shooter, Benjamin, Brady, Madelyn, Raylen, Keith and Savannah; and one great-great granddaughter, Evah.  She is also survived by two brothers, Eugene T. (Jack) and his wife Jane and Carl G. (Joe) Whitesell and his wife Mary, and many nieces, nephews and wonderful friends.    Mabel worked on the family farm, at local grocery stores, and retired as an Augusta County school bus driver.  After her retirement, she spent hours volunteering as she sat with the elderly in their homes, worked at the pumpkin patch, and enjoyed helping with other fund raising activities.  She was a lifelong member of Greenville United Methodist Church and active in the Greenville Methodist Women. She loved cooking and preparing meals for the “Dinner and a Show” and many other church ministries.  She was a member of the Eastern Star and an active member of the Riverheads Ruritan Club.  Mabel was an avid bowler and she loved participating in league and competition events.  She was a passionate sports fan and loved watching her sons and grandsons play baseball, and clearly stood out as the loudest fan as she cheered her great-grandsons to state champion wrestling victories.  Mabel exuberated the meaning of Red Pride, as one of her favorite past times was cheering the Riverheads Gladiators to victory.  She enjoyed people and she loved life. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, October 6, 2017 at Greenville United Methodist Church Cemetery by the Rev. Kevin W. Haynes.  The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Thursday, October 5, 2017 at Henry Funeral Home and at any other time at the residence.  In lieu of flowers, a contribution in her memory may be sent to Greenville United Methodist Church building fund.   The family would like to extend a heartfelt and special thank you to the staff and caregivers at Kings’ Daughters Nursing and Rehab Center for the excellent care she received the past 23 months and for the many friendships she formed and valued.  We would also like to thank Hospice of the Shenandoah for the compassionate care and professionalism they provided.
