WAYNESBORO, VA… Margaret Ann (Harner) Fitzgerald, 80, wife of Otho Fitzgerald, of New Hope, died Sunday, June 5, 2016, at Augusta Health, Fishersville. A lifelong resident of Augusta County, she was born November 21, 1935, to the late Thomas R. and Edith Adair (Twitty) Harner. Mrs. Fitzgerald, known to many students as “Ms. Fitz,” was a beloved teacher’s aide and secretary at New Hope Elementary and then Clymore Elementary. She retired in 2001 after 30 years with Augusta County Schools. She loved gardening and enjoyed all things in nature except snakes. She loved working with her hands and created pottery for many years. She was very active, playing tennis two to three times a week. A voracious reader, she particularly enjoyed a good mystery. Most of all, she loved spending time with her family.In addition to her husband, she is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Brian and Allison Fitzgerald of Mt. Sidney; her daughter, Sarah Layne of Christiansburg; her sister, Barbara Harner Drumeller of Waynesboro; four grandchildren and many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Betty Harner Thompson. Her funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 8, 2016, in the New Hope United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in the Church Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
