Staunton, VA…     Marguerite Elizabeth (Duncan) McFarland Bradford, 91, widow of Alan Powell Bradford died peacefully in her home and surrounded by her children on May 20, 2017.        She was born on September 21, 1925 in San Antonio, TX, the daughter of the late Homer Joshua and Marguerite  (Coleman) Duncan.     Surviving family members include son, LTC (Ret) Richard McFarland of Alexandria; daughters, Elizabeth McFarland and husband (Mike Wigen) of Bozeman, MT and Trisha McFarland and husband (Martin Kepner) of Chelmsford, MA; grandchildren, Kate, Josh and Kelly McFarland, and Martin, Duncan and Jake Kepner.  She is also survived by Douglas and Helen Bradford.     She was preceded in death by her first husband, Frank A. McFarland; her son Robert Edwin McFarland; and sister Dorothy Duncan.      Mrs. Bradford graduated from Brenau College, Gainesville, GA with a Bachelor in Chemistry and later received a Masters in Public Administration from University of Washington. She began her career employed by the Department of the Army as a research chemist and retired 30 years later as a division director in the Night Vision Lab.     Marguerite was truly gifted with many extraordinary talents; she was a gracious host, well known for her culinary skills; she took great pride in creating a beautiful home and had a life long interest in landscape design.   She was a voracious reader and an avid collector of Shenandoah Valley antiques. She enjoyed traveling in the Western states, particularly camping and hiking in Montana. She shared these interests with her grandchildren.     The family thanks her long-term caregivers and more recently Hospice of the Shenandoah. Contributions may be made to Brenau University Annual Scholarship Fund, 500 WA Street, SE, Gainesville, GA 30501 or to a charity of one's choice.       The family welcomes her friends and neighbors at her home, 136 Baldwin Lane between the hours of 4:00 and 6:00 on Monday, May 22, 2017.       A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 17, 2017 in St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Alexandria.
