Marion Lee (Stuart) Cochran

Cochran, Marion Lee Stuart, 93, died on Tuesday, December 19, 2017 at her residence.  She was born March 21, 1924 in Abingdon, VA, the daughter of the late Sen. Harry C. and Marion Lee (Cobbs) Stuart.  She was also predeceased by her husband of 62 years and the love of her life, Justice George M. Cochran in 2011, and her elder son, G. Moffett Cochran, V in 2013.  She graduated from Hollins University (B.A. 1946). She was very proud to be a Stauntonian and a Virginian which was reflected in all her avenues of service.  She served on numerous local and state boards and commissions.  Some of her local involvement and leadership roles included Planters Bank Board of Directors, Thornrose Cemetery Board of Directors, member and president of the Augusta Garden Club, founder and board member of the Frontier Culture Museum Foundation, founder and board member of the American Shakespeare Center, Stuart Hall School Board of Governors, Woodrow Wilson Presidential Library Board of Trustees and Historic Staunton Foundation Trustee.  She also was an active member of Trinity Episcopal Church for 70 years. Her statewide and national involvement included the Jamestown-Yorktown Commission, the Committee on Refurbishing of the Executive Mansion, president of the Garden Club of Virginia, Hollins University Board of Trustees, the Garden Club of America Board of Directors, University of Virginia Board of Visitors, trustee, chairman and chairman emeritus of the Thomas Jefferson Memorial Foundation, and the University of Virginia Foundation Board of Directors. She received the Garden Club of Virginia Massie Medal in 1980, the Hollins Medal (as her mother had done) in 1985, American Shakespeare Center Robin Goodfellow Award in 2004, and the Mary Baldwin University Algenon Sydney Sullivan Award in 2011.  In addition, she and her husband received the Outstanding Virginia Award in 1995.  She is survived by her son and two daughters-in-law, Stuart and Emily Cochran of Staunton and DuPre Cochran of Norwalk, CT; four grandchildren, Carter and his wife, Jodie of Mt. Pleasant, SC, Peyton Cochran of New York, NY, Alexander and his wife, Wan-Lae of Washington, DC and Lee Cochran of New York, NY; and two great-granddaughters, Caroline and Kate Cochran of Mt. Pleasant, SC.  The family would like to thank and acknowledge the wonderful care that was provided by Linda Frye, Tracy Sandeson, Theresa Bane, Janis Lucas and Tawana Lucas. A memorial service will be conducted on Friday, December 22, 2017 at 3 p.m. in Trinity Episcopal Church, Staunton, by the Rev. Dr. Paul Nancarrow.  Burial will be private.  The family will receive friends at the home of Stuart and Emily Cochran following the service.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Garden Club of Virginia, 12 East Franklin St., Richmond, VA 23219, American Frontier Culture Museum Foundation, P.O.Box 629, Staunton, VA 24402, or Trinity Episcopal Church, P.O.Box 208, Staunton, VA 24402.  Henry Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
