Mary Charlene Kester

M. CHARLENE KESTER STAUNTON, VA Mary Charlene (Quick) Kester walked into the arms of her Lord on March 5, 2014. She was born July 4, 1923, the daughter of Stonewall M. and Bertha (Dodd) Quick. Charlene Married Joseph C. Kester, Jr. on June 20, 1942, who was her primary caregiver. She died at home with him by her side. Preceding her in death besides her parents were four brothers, Henry, Marcus, Junior and John Quick and three sisters, Elizabeth Meeks, Louise Meek, and Mabel Swim. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Surviving are her husband of 71 ½ years, Joseph C. Kester, Jr., two sons and daughters-in-law, Bobby and Barbara, and Jesse and Midge Kester; one granddaughter, Susan K. Layman; three grandsons, Neil and wife Jennifer, Andy and wife Ashleigh, and Ryan Kester; two great granddaughters, Rachel and Jessica Layman and one great grandson, Titus Kester. She is also survived by a sister-in-law, Dorothy Quick, a number of nieces and nephews and special friends, Homer, Sharon and Brenda. Charlene was a longtime member of Barren Ridge Church of the Brethren and greatly enjoyed her visits from Pastor Galen. She retired from VSDB in 1988. Charlene was a faithful and very verbal fan of her church's softball team on which all three grandsons played. The team will always remember her yelling "Get the ball down" to each batter. Charlene looked forward to all family outings and especially the annual family trip to Blackwater Falls, WV. She loved flowers, singing and yodeling on family trips, dancing, playing Skip-Bo and meeting with her friends at Hardee's. She was especially proud of her "angel" Christmas trees. Her family was her most prized possession. She was such a blessing to her family and will be greatly missed. A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 9, 2014, at Barren Ridge Church of the Brethren by the Rev. Galen Combs. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Pallbearers will be her husband, J.C. Kester, Jr., her grandsons, Neil, Andy, and Ryan Kester, Homer Moats, Eddie Taylor, and Tony Lowery. Honorary pallbearers will be Eddie Back, Tom and Debbie Salkeld, Sharon Altizer, Brenda Smith, Mike and Sharon Gilbert, longtime friend and hairdresser, Linda McNeal, and loving nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 5:30 until 8 p.m. Saturday, March 8, 2014, at Barren Ridge Church of the Brethren. The family would like to extend a special thank you to Amy and Stacy with Hospice of the Shenandoah for their wonderful care. Henry Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
