Fishersville, Va- Melvin Jake Sweeney, 90, passed away peacefully April 25, 2015 at his son's home in Staunton. Melvin was born in Roanoke, Va on February 18, 1925, son of the late Jake and Irene Sweeney. He was united in marriage for more than 70 years to Minnie Loretta (Forbes) Sweeney who survives. In addition to his wife, he is survived by three sons; Melvin E. Sweeney and wife Patsy of Staunton, Ronald P.L. Sweeney of Fishersville and Billy W. Sweeney of Charlottesville; one brother, Tommy Sweeney and his wife Nancy of Fishersville; two grandchildren, Kevin Sweeney and wife Alice of Gloucester, Va and Shawn Sweeney and wife Heidi of Staunton; and three great- grandchildren, Raven, Hannah, and Noah Sweeney. He was preceded in death by a brother, Charles T. Sweeney and his wife Josephine Sweeney of Roanoke. Melvin was employed as a factory worker for over 45 years. After retirement he worked in the family construction and rental business until he was 86 years old and loved it. Other than work he enjoyed fishing (on a regular basis) with his son Ronnie and grandson Shawn. He was a faithful member of Crossroads Baptist Church where he loved the membership and especially Pastor Bill Johnson. A funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday April 28, 2015 in the Henry Funeral Home Chapel by his grandson Father Kevin Sweeney. Burial will follow in Augusta Memorial Park. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his honor to Valley Rescue Mission.
