Minnie Lee (Engle) Shafer

MINNIE E. SHAFER STAUNTON, VA Minnie Lee Engle Shafer, 90, of Staunton, passed away Sunday April 29, 2018 at Augusta Nursing and Rehab in Fishersville, Va. Mrs. Shafer was born November 28, 1927 in Adrian, Michigan, a daughter of the late Howard Jenkins Engle and Ellen Marthabell (Henson) Engle.           In 1944, after graduating high school in Rutherford County, N.C., Mrs. Shafer arrived in Staunton and resided in the home of Ralph T. Dalton while attending Dunsmore Business College. She retired from the Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Company in Staunton in 1979 after 33 years of service. She has been a member of St. Johns United Methodist Church in Staunton since 1960.  In 1948 she married John C. Thacker, Jr. This marriage lasted eighteen years. In 1977 she married Thomas Andrew Shafer who died in 1987. In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Shafer was preceded in death by a son, John William Thacker, who died at birth in 1960. Also preceding her in death were three brothers, Albert Engle, William Engle and Howard Engle. Also three sisters, Lilly Bell Beheler, Hazel Shepherd and a half sister, Mary Cevela. Mrs. Shafer was the last surviving member of her immediate family. A graveside service will be conducted at 11:00 am Thursday, May 3, 2018 in Thornrose Cemetery, Staunton by the Revs. Chuck Cole and Steven Greer.  There will be no formal visitation but friends may call at Henry Funeral Home anytime between 9-5. Arrangements have been entrusted to Henry Funeral Home.
