MARGARET “PEGGY” C. HEWITT  SWOOPE, VA…  Margaret “Peggy” C. Hewitt, 83, wife of Elton M. Hewitt, Jr., passed away Thursday, October 19, 2017 at her home after a brief battle with a brain tumor. She was born August 30, 1934 in Augusta County, a daughter of the late Francis George and Margaret (Zuber) Cook. Peggy and Jr. were joined in marriage November 24, 1954. She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She was an amazing baker and shared her baked goods with her entire community. Peggy was a longtime active member of Hebron Presbyterian Church serving in many capacities. She was a dedicated alto in the Hebron choir from her teenage years until her illness. Peggy was known for her gorgeous gladiolas. She was an avid Boston Red Sox fan and also supported the Staunton Braves. She and her family housed players for numerous years, remaining close to many of them to this day. Peggy is survived by her husband, Elton M. Hewitt, Jr. of Swoope; son, David Hewitt and wife, Laura Lee, of Swoope; two daughters, Susan Picheˊ and husband, Claude, of Roanoke, and Polly Hewitt of Swoope; two grandsons, Jeff Hewitt and Brad Hewitt and wife, Tiffany; step- granddaughter, Kim Picheˊ Montgomery and her family; and Phyllis Summers, of Waynesboro, who has been like a second sister. She is survived by special friends, Marie Wood, Deborah and Bill Warren, and Craig and Michelle Cozart and family. In addition to her parents, Peggy was preceded in death by her sister, Betty C. Costello. A celebration of her life will be held at 3 p.m. on Monday, October 23, 2017 at Hebron Presbyterian Church. Burial will be private in the church cemetery.  The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the church social hall and other times at the residence. Memorials may be made to Hebron Presbyterian Church, 423 Hebron Road, Staunton, VA 24401. Special thanks to Dr. H. Lynn Moore, Jr., the UVA Neuro-Oncology Department, and the wonderful friends and caregivers during these past few months.  Henry Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
