Marie C. Cowardin

Marie Anna Cash Cowardin, 77, of Staunton, went to be with her Lord and Savior, Wednesday, November 18, 2020 at Shenandoah Nursing & Rehab, Fishersville, VA. She was a determined fighter in her brave battle with ALS.

She was born June 14, 1943, in Staunton, VA, the daughter of the late Samuel Charles Edward and Thelma (Livick) Cash and a 1961 graduate of Wilson Memorial High School. She was a graduate of the Staunton School of Cosmetology and a dedicated hairstylist for 37 years. She took ultimate pride in her work and loved that she could bring so much joy and care to her valuable clients. She thoroughly enjoyed getting to know each of her clients, like they were an extension of her family. She never met a stranger and was loved and adored by many.

Marie was very strong and grounded in her faith and wanted everyone to know Jesus and to be saved by HIS grace. She always said, "There is no way but "UP". She loved the Lord with all her heart and interceded and witnessed to/for people with her wealth of knowledge in scripture. She deeply cherished her family and was the proudest mother, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt and sister. She enjoyed horses especially the Clydesdale, Elvis, and gospel music. She was an excellent cook and everybody near and afar wanted her delicious, tasty homemade potato salad.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by the father of her children, Allen F. Shifflett and her husband of 25 years, Robert "Bob" Cowardin.

Surviving are her three children, daughters, Aleta (Mike) Ilch, Dora (Larry) Snead and son, Charles "Sam" Shifflett; five grandchildren, Elana (Joey) Sorrell, Kayla Snead, Brooke (Jake) Banton, Oliva Ilch and Shyanne Shifflett; four great-grandchildren, Ellie Marie and Marley Jo Sorrell, Willow Raye and James Bo Banton; a sister, Jane Wilkins, six brothers, Tommy (Brenda) Cash, Glenn Cash, Rodger (Ronda) Cash, Curtis (Shirley) Cash, Gary (Darlene) Cash, Ervin (Linda) Cash, numerous nieces and nephews and her very best childhood friend of 73 years, Barbara Hayes.

The family would kindly like to thank all of Miss Marie's caregivers and nurses at Shenandoah Nursing & Rehab and the great care of her Hospice Nurse, Dan Wyatt of Legacy Hospice, Fishersville VA including the extension of other Hospice employees.
