Miguel Angel Garces De Marcilla

Miguel Angel Garces de Marcilla passed away at his home at The Legacy at North Augusta on Saturday, May 21, 2022 at the age of 92.

He loved gathering with family and friends, especially to play canasta or dominoes. He enjoyed farming and being outdoors and was also an avid fan of professional boxing and baseball.

Miguel goes to join his parents Miguel Angel Garces II and Adriana Betancourt Garces, and siblings Temistocles, Adriana, Estela, and Emma.

His sense of humor and love of family will be missed by Lorenza Maria (Herrada), his wife of 68 years, his sister Lucrecia Guitian (Garces) and her husband Celso and his sister-in-law Xeomara Garces (Fernandez); his son, Miguel A. Garces IV and wife Patricia (Haycock) of Lewes Delaware and their children Miguel A. Garces V, Erin Adragna (Garces) and Heather Garces; his daughter Alicia Garces Roberts and her husband Wesley of Staunton and their children Alicia Roberts Bowens and Morgan Roberts Harrison; his son Juan of Levittown, Pennsylvania and his wife Marketta (Stoy) and their son Juan. He was also blessed with 3 great-grandchildren Tyler Roberts, Charlotte Harrison, and Adriana Adragna; and an extended family of cousins, nieces and nephews, and their families.

Miguel was born in Camaguey, Cuba. He attended Belen Jesuit School and Havana University where he earned his undergraduate degree in Agricultural Engineering. He emigrated from Cuba to the US with his family in 1962. After earning his Masters Degree from Rutgers University, he served as Research Farm Manager at American Cyanamid Company in Princeton, NJ while also starting his own farm. Upon his retirement, he moved to the Shenandoah Valley where he farmed full time raising registered Polled Hereford cattle, and was very involved with the Polled Hereford Association. When he retired from farming, he and Maria moved to Miami Beach, where they spent several years enjoying extended family and the Cuban community. They returned to Staunton to be closer to family and lived for several years at The Legacy.

The family is grateful for the care and attention provided by the staff of The Legacy as well as the continuing support and excellent care provided by Legacy Hospice.

A mass will be held in his memory at St. Francis Roman Catholic Church in Staunton on Saturday, July 9 at 11:00 am.
