    October 23, 1921 - April 3, 2014

PAUL G. ALEXANDER VERONA, VA On Thursday, April 3, 2014, in Augusta Nursing Center, Paul Gardner Alexander, 92, husband of the late Julia Dunsmore Alexander, formerly of 63 Maury Mill Road, joined his Heavenly Father and loved ones. He was born October 23, 1921, in Mount Sidney, a son of the late John and Edna (Young) Alexander. Mr. Alexander lived his entire life in the communities of Mount Sidney and Verona. He was an active member of Verona United Methodist Church for over 60 years. In addition to his wife, family members include a son and daughter-in-law, Wendell and Sara Alexander of Glen Allen; a daughter and son-in-law, Cindy A. and Sonny Roberts of Forest; one grandson, Jacob W. Alexander of Glen Allen; two brothers, Nelson R. Alexander and wife, Lois of Harrisonburg, and Lindy C. Alexander and wife, Sharon, of Mount Sidney; special caregiver and friend, Barbara Bryant; and a number of nieces, nephews, including a special niece, Cheryl Alexander Burns. He is preceded in death by a grandson, Andrew W. Alexander; a sister, Frances A. Christian; and four brothers, Stanley R. Alexander, Joseph A. Alexander, Edwin G. Alexander, and Roscoe V. Alexander. Paul was a World War II Veteran and a longtime member of the Verona VFW. He was an active volunteer for Camp Overlook, the United Methodist Church Camp in Keelzetown for over 30 years. Paul was an avid supporter of the VUMC softball team as well as a member of the VUMC, "Apple Dumpling Gang', working hard to support the church's vision. He loved history and was always willing to share a story. Professionally he was an electrician. He retired after many years of service from WWRC as electrician foreman. Paul was an involved Father and Grandfather, traveling many miles to attend numerous activities and support his children and grandchildren. He and Judy enjoyed several wonderful trips after his retirement but their favorite was to Nova Scotia. Paul had a zest for life; he lived with much gusto and a heartfelt smile. Prior to his failing health Paul proudly lived independently until the age of 90. A memorial service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Monday, April 7th in Verona United Methodist Church by the Rev. Robert Weeks and the Rev. David Burch. Burial will be private. The family will receive friends following the service. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Verona United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 47-406 Lee Highway, Verona, VA 24482 to benefit Camp Overlook and VUMC Food Pantry. Henry Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
