CLOVERDALE, VA Philip Edward Harner, 78, of Cloverdale, VA, formerly of New Hope, died Saturday, December 22, 2012 in Roanoke, VA. Mr. Harner was born in Augusta County on May 30, 1934, a son of the late Ray Owen and Hazel Louise (Early) Harner. He served in the U.S. Army from 1957-1959. He was previously employed by Ingleside Resort as a groundskeeper, and was a member of New Hope United Methodist Church. He is survived by a son, Edward Harner and his wife Deana, of Maryville, TN; two daughters, Jeanne Harner of Roanoke and Phyllis Green and her husband, James, of Bedford, VA; a brother and sister-in-law, Owen and Dolly Harner of New Hope; six grandchildren, Melissa Colbert and her husband, Tony, of Bedford, Tabatha Harner, Meagan Wright of Roanoke, Robert Wright of Roanoke, Danielle Bickling and her husband, Keith, and Jess Green; three great grandchildren, Trevor Smondroski, Carson Smondroski, and Kayden Briggs; and lifelong friend, Elwood Cash. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Joan Gosnell. A funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, December 27, 2012 at New Hope United Methodist Church by Rev. Doug Gunsalus. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Graveside rites will be provided by Staunton-Augusta V. F. W. Post #2216. Active pallbearers will be Ed Harner, James Green, Tony Colbert, Robert Wright, Keith Bickling, and Elwood Cash.
